Scott Bauer, a writer for the Associated Press (AP), is reporting that Governor Walker has announced major cuts to Education funding in the state of Wisconsin. According to the article, the cut is nearly 9%, which equates to about $900,000,000.
This comes at a bad time, because the United States, according to Geographic.org, ranks 33rd in education. Countries like Korea, Mexico, and the Czech Republic have scored higher than the United States. While these numbers are nearly five years old, it does show a downward spiral in our education sector.
The priorities in this country (USA) are askew, because we spend 20% of our revenue on the military, but this number does not include discretionary spending, nor does it include money spent on research. Discretionary spending on our defense equates to another 20% of federal income. So, we spend nearly 50% of our income on our military, yet only 4.63% is spent on the Department of Education.
There is absolutely no reason why we should be spending nearly 50% of our income on our military. Perhaps if they closed down all of the empirical bases that we have, we could easily reduce the amount that we spend on our ‘killing machine’ known as the military.
This should be a non-issue. Education, or destruction? Which do you prefer?
