The United States may Join the Libyan Civil War

Most news organizations are still saying that ‘it may turn in to a Civil War,’ but let’s face it, it already is a Civil War.

According to the New York Times (NYT), republican and democratic Senators are banging the war drum again. They are calling for all options to be on the table, including but not limited to deployed forces, training, and a cache of weapons for the Libyan people.

While this sounds good, logical, and humane, we have no need to get caught up in a Civil War. The only thing that we should do is make the Libyan Government impotent. We need to sanction them, freeze their assets, which we’ve already done to a large extent, and we also need to show our support for the people. Other than that, it is their battle to be won.

Now, I understand that without France, the US would probably not have won the Revolutionary War, but the French had everything to gain and nothing to lose. We, on the other hand, are already fighting two wars, and we are currently supporting an empirical military platform. Also, we are dealing with an economic crisis at home; this country is running on borrowed money, and every extra penny that we spend becomes more than just a penny that we pay back. We are paying interest on nearly everything that we purchase, and we are selling our country out to the highest bidder. To suggest that we engage ourselves in someone else’s Civil War is ludicrous.

I know that there are people in our government want us to think we are this all-powerful nation, but the fact-of-the-matter is that we are not the country we used to be. Due to thirty years of de-regulation, and oppressive tax codes, we are on our way to becoming, in terms of income gaps, a third world country.

We must not engage ourselves in this, because if we do, it would be another hindrance to the recovery of our economic stability.
